Supergen

The SUPERGEN (Sustainable Power Generation and Supply) initiative is a programme of research at UK universities funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. (www.epsrc.ac.uk ).

Biomass & Bio Energy

The Biomass, Biofuels and Energy Crops Consortium will carry out research into renewable energy generation from biomass - any plant material which can be used as a fuel, such as wood, agricultural waste and vegetable oils. The research partners include the Universities of Aston, Cranfield, Leeds , Sheffield , Ulster , UMIST, as well as Rothamsted Research Institute and the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research. The industrial partners are Powergen, Alstom, Rural Generation and B9 Energy.

Future netowrks and technologies

The FNT theme addresses the form of electricity distribution network required to facilitate a sustainable energy policy and effective electricity trading. Six universities form the starting point of the consortium: UMIST; Strathclyde; Imperial College ; Bath; Durham and Cambridge .

Sustainable Hydrogen Energy

SHEC will target many of the forefront fundamental, multidisciplinary research challenges in the production, storage, distribution and utilization of hydrogen. In addition, we will study the feasibility and acceptability of sustainable hydrogen as an energy carrier through a range of socio-economic projects, ranging from the public awareness and acceptability of hydrogen, impact analyses and regulatory issues.

Marine

The Supergen Marine Energy Research Consortium will conduct research into marine energy conversion and delivery. The work is collaborative with The University of Edinburgh, Heriot Watt University , Lancaster University , The Robert Gordon University, Strathclyde University . Twenty national and international marine energy and electricity supply companies have agreed to collaborate in the work.
