The PV21 renewal proposal addresses key indicators of Emission of Greenhouse gases, power station mission of greenhouse gases and depletion of fossil fuels.

The scientific programme addresses the economic indicator of energy price where it is recognised that the current cost of PV module installation is not competitive with fossil fuel prices. An important element of the proposal is sustainability of materials supply for very large scale production that will be needed to achieve energy production from solar PV on a scale of 20% of our total energy needs.

It is also recognised that the rapidly growing PV industry, currently at the rate of 40% per annum, provides economic opportunities for the UK. The strong and innovative research programme proposed here will provide the intellectual capacity for the UK to be at the forefront of this industry. The specific outputs are listed below:

  • Provide solutions for substantial cost reduction in thin film PV module manufacture.

  • Provide solutions for an increase in efficiency of thin film PV modules with the aim of achieving >15% (AM1.5)
  • Demonstrate viable alternatives to high cost elements in thin film PV manufacture.

  • Provide a source of highly skilled and motivated young researchers to become future leaders in the PV industry.
  • Create a critical mass of networked research activity in the UK to compete for EU R&D funding.
